Power Shopping

OPRAH TURNS “50”!

I am referring to Oprah Winfrey, of course.  The most powerful woman in the entertainment industry celebrated her 50th birthday with a multitude of elaborate parties last week.  So why is Thomas mentioning her milestone in this week’s column?  Did you see the Oprah Show and the videos of those parties? Thomas wasn’t in any of them!  Is Thomas bitter?  Of course!!

Maybe, I am just jealous.  When Thomas’ birthday rolls around, is he presented with elaborate parties?  Extravagant gifts? Congratulated by movie and television stars? Make that a big fat…NO!  As a matter of fact, Thomas had to WORK on his last birthday.

Now, how much did those parties cost?  Most importantly, did the hosts of those parties pay full price? If they would have just come to Thomas in the beginning, they could have saved themselves a LOT of money.

Move over Oprah…here is how Thomas will celebrate his next birthday.  And you thought YOUR parties were the talk of the town…

Oprah had at least a ˝ dozen parties, with three of them being “the parties of the century”.  Estimated costs…$2,000,000+.   Thomas will also have 3 parties.  Estimated costs, $200…tax and tip extra!

The first of Oprah’s parties was given by her boyfriend, Stedman, at a restaurant in the Sears Tower in Chicago.  I believe about 75 guests were in attendance.  Now, Stedman probably spent close to $10,000 on that party.  Thomas would be happy with 75 friends partaking of McDonald’s Happy Meals on the observation deck of the Sears Tower.  Since those 75 friends would be paying for their own meals and SkyDeck passes, it wouldn’t cost Thomas a dime!

The second of Oprah’s parties took place in the elaborate gardens of the Hotel Bel Aire in Los Angeles, California.  It was a luncheon for 50 powerful & successful women. I wonder if any of those women were successful ‘power shoppers’?  Probably not…most likely each woman has a personal shopper. Many would be afraid to ‘break a nail’.  Since this column IS all about Thomas & power shopping, a party for 50 powerful & successful “Power Shoppers” is in order!  But where do the festivities take place?  I think the food court of Westfield Mall in Hobart, IN (formerly SouthLake Mall) would be perfect.  After a quick lunch (Thomas would ‘persuade’ the Spice Girls, Poodles, Fifi, or Aquanetta to pay for his), we would “make our mark” the stores!

The third of Oprah’s parties took place on the exquisite estate of Oprah’s good friends in Los Angeles.  I was ‘blown away’ by the extravagance of the party. Gold, gold, gold was everywhere.  Over 200,000 flowers adorned a huge tented dining pavilion.  250 guests were seated for dinner, each with their own serving attendant.  Oh, please, Oprah, I don’t even know 250 people, much less would I want 250 ‘blow-hards’ joining me for dinner!  Thomas prefers more intimate dinner parties.  I envision a pizza party at Chuckie Cheese with a dozen ultimate ‘power shoppers’.  We would swap shopping stories, sip diet colas, and eat pizza all night long, then find the nearest 24 hour Wal*Mart and power shop until the sun rises!

That Oprah…thinking she can ‘out do’ Thomas!

And now…

DON’T DOUBT THOMAS!

THINK WINTER OUTERWEAR!

TJ Maxx [nationwide] has all of their winter outerwear (men’s, women’s, and children’s) on clearance.  I purchased a gray plaid wool coat by Ralph Lauren, for $50.00.  Original price…$450.00.  I noticed some leather coats in the men’s department for under $80.

THINK JEWELRY!

Jewelry makes the perfect gift for you special ‘someone’ this Valentine’s season (or any season).  A number of stores have jewelry specials.  Meijers [nationwide] has 60% off on all their fine jewelry.  Prices range from $1.19 to $1,199.99.  I saw selections of amethyst, ruby, emerald, and diamond rings, earrings, pendants, and bracelets.

THINK KITCHEN APPLIANCES!

Walgreen’s [nationwide] has a sale on their Kitchen Gourmet line of kitchen appliances.  For $7.99, the selection includes a 2 slice toaster, a 1.5qt slow cooker, a food processor, a tall can opener, a hand blender, a single burner, a 5 speed mixer, a deluxe juicer, a 3 cup rice cooker, a Belgian waffle maker, a 32-0z.hot pot, or a 5 cup coffee maker.  A travel steam and spray iron, by Perfection, is also on sale for $7.99.  Thomas suggests purchasing a few…you never know when you’ll need a gift.

THINK TABLE LINENS!

TJ Maxx & Marshalls [both nationwide] have clearance bins full of table linens at terrific prices.  I picked up a 60” x 102” cotton woven tablecloth, by Woodbridge, for $5.00. The matching napkins were $4.00 for package of 4.  I saw set of bed linens, mostly queen and king sizes, at unbelievable prices.

Now, back to planning my next birthday party.  Watch out Oprah…!
