From Our Founder

by Robert J. Wichlinski

Man, is it hot out, or what?  A former business partner of mine described hot, sultry weather as, “raining up.”

To be truthful, I love hot, humid weather… especially when playing golf or throwing horseshoes on the beach.  Now don’t misunderstand me, I appreciate air conditioning (my wife refers to A/C as a “mood altering drug”), but there’s something about baking in the sun that I appreciate and enjoy… it’s almost “other worldly.”  Extreme weather also makes for great conversation… especially among strangers.  I was at the Family Express on Sunday and I noticed folks just striking up a conversation at the coffee machine using the hot weather as the ice breaker.  I imagined in my head the internal dialogue, “well, I’ve seen you in here before and I’ve always wanted to say hi and find out more about you, but I just never knew how to get the conversation going… and then I came in here and saw you sweating up a storm similar to mine… and well, it just did not seem so intimidating any more… we had something in common… the weather.”

What’s really cool is that when it does finally rain, the moisture will pour down through the warm dry air and if you’re lucky enough to get caught in the first few minutes of the deluge, it’s going to feel like a warm shower out-of-doors.  I recommend pulling up a chaise lounge, laying back and basking in the wash of warm water raining down from the heavens.  I have been fortunate enough to experience this before and you never forget the feeling… just make certain to head inside if it begins lightening… or hailing!

I do feel bad about the folks holding outdoor parties and community events when the temperature soars… folks just don’t attend (only diehards like me show up)… unless of course you had the insight (and luck) to schedule the event at the beach, local pool or the water park… then attendance will soar along with the thermometer.  All you can do is put on your best face and go on with the show... and hope the 1000lbs. of chicken-on-a-stick will hold up in the freezer.

I bring all this up because the 4th of July is soon approaching and I want to encourage everyone to search out community and celebrate.   A whole bunch of folks are risking everything that we might be free… we owe it to them to recognize their efforts and express our thanks & appreciation by “showing up.”  Show up for a parade, show up for a barbeque, show up for a festival, show up for a fireworks display, show up for a family picnic, show up for a concert… leave the comfort and privacy of your personal space and choose to be “part of the main” … even if your sojourn is brief.  We are “in this together,” we need each other and we need to remind ourselves that, no matter how we may try, life is not lived in a vacuum.

And that’s all I wanted to express.  Other than to wish you and yours a happy, safe and memorable 4th of July holiday!
