Power Shopping By Thomas Greetings from Hong Kong! Thomas is into week 4 of his month long tour of China & Tibet. I must be exhausted for I think I just saw Auntie Martha Stewart shopping the farmers market. Speaking of markets, Hong Kong is the only city in the world that one can shop…around your hotel…on top of your hotel…under your hotel…in your hotel…and in the room of your hotel! I mentioned this in an article I wrote a few years ago and it is still true. A Power Shopper can ‘shop-till-they-drop’ without leaving their comfortable bed. Did I mention yet that I now know 1,001 uses for rice? Hmmm, I should let Martha know; maybe she will feature me on her new television show. Now…back to Thomas and Shopping! Thomas is on ‘Power Shopper’ overload! My day begins at 7:00am with quiet breakfast in the hotel dining room, which has huge windows overlooking the beautiful skyline of Hong Kong. I am on the 3rd floor, so I also have a clear shot of the street below. It is empty, except for a few well-dressed businessmen on their way to, I presume, the financial district. At this time I consult the city map. I make extensive notes as to what I wish to purchase and then locate on the map where the stores are located. As I sip my last bit of coffee, I look out and notice a few more people entering the street. My check arrives, I sign it to my room, and exit the dining room. Then I hear a loud BOOM! Was Hong Kong under attack by a terrorist group? NO! I wander out onto the street and notice that the streets are jam-packed with people; shoppers…police officers…children…street vendors, not to mention, the thousands of bicycles! I then looked at my wristwatch and realize that it is 8:00am. That ‘sonic’ boom was the Power Shoppers of Hong Kong ‘hitting’ the streets. The noise level is off the charts. It is only 8:05am and Thomas has been asked to purchase a ‘copy watch’ [fake Rolex’s mostly] at least 20 times. I found a vendor that was selling Ralph Lauren “authentic’ shirts…2 for $5.00. Bargaining, bantering, haggling, and arguing can be heard (Oh, wait, that is Thomas doing the bargaining, bantering, and haggling. But Thomas argue?…never! Rumor has it that there is a cult following for Thomas in Hong Kong. I heard that there were thousands of websites devoted to Thomas and his Power Shopping ways. Those Chinese…how kind of them to consider me their god! My next article will be written once I am back on USA soil…provided customs lets me back in (remember last years incident). And now… DON’T DOUBT THOMAS! Since I am half way around the world (I did cross the International Date Line, so I have no clue what day this actually is), I can only tell you about the bargains I found in Hong Kong. But that doesn’t help you in the USA. My suggestion? Since this article is posted after the 4th of July, I am sure that many of the stores are starting their summer clearance sales. Check out the stores for me…read the sale flyers in the paper…and then start one of those pesky chain letters (via email or post) and tell10 friends about the bargains that you found. You know the routine…10 tell 10 more…tell 10 more…and so forth. Thomas |
