Fred's Corner

Evelyn's Boy Harry

I’m not really a fan of country music. Like the rest of my generation, I grew up on Motown, The Beatles, Elvis, James Taylor, Doors, Doobies, Hendrix, and many others. Country is o.k., but not really my cup of tea. I like some of the rock country, but I draw the line at the twangy stuff. I remember the first time I heard “don’t drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of Heaven”. I just can’t enjoy those tragic heartfelt lyrics that seem to be part of every country song.

One day I stopped at the insurance office that my sister Theresa works at in Merrillville. She had gone to the post office and her boss Harry was sitting in his office listening to some music. I said hi and sat down in the chair across from his desk and didn’t really pay any attention to what was playing. He said he wanted to show me his album. I thought to myself that I really didn’t want to spend half the afternoon looking at vacation photos but I finally agreed. What he brought me was a music CD with his picture on the front. I said this is really cool, where did you get it done. What I didn’t realize was that the CD playing in the office was written and performed by Harry Dickson, Theresa’s boss.

I’ve known this guy for about 15 years and I didn’t even know that he could walk and chew gum at the same time, let alone write songs, play the guitar, and sing. He even whistles good. After he showed me his CD album I realized that the music that was playing was his. I started to listen with a renewed interest and realized it was really good. I guess I’m like most people and didn’t really listen to those kind of things until some radio jock hits me over the head with it.

We also won’t be able to see Harry on the talk show circuit, like Leno, or Letterman, but you can hear it played on WLJE FM 105.5 in Valpo. I think that a couple of the songs on the album could be major hits. Harry put his heart and soul (not to mention his own money) into this project and really came up with a great product. He has not set up any distribution in the music stores, but the album is available by calling Dickson & Associates at 219-736-1050. If you want to hear some of the album for free, call WLJE and request one my favorites, “A good old country song”. You’ll really enjoy it.

Harry has worked on this project for two years. He has recorded in three different studio’s. While recording some tracks in Nashville, his producer invited him to perform at the world famous “Wild Horse Saloon”. The show airs every afternoon on the TNN station. It was his first time on stage and he must have done well because he was invited back last June for Nashville’s “Fan Fare”. Clarksville, Tennessee, disc jockey Steve Pryor heard him perform and has playing Harry’s album on WDXN, in Clarksville.

I was really impressed by Harry’s drive and his talent. He believed in his project and rightfully so. It is a very entertaining album. The first three thousand albums are bar coded and represent a Collector’s “First Run”. Harry also personally autographs each album before sending them out. I would hope that you would call and send for one. This is a local talent making good. Try it and I think you will have an enjoyable surprise, I know I did.
